Writing at my school has a very tedious writing format that
they have us follow for short answers, essays and research papers. Every year
in high school we have to do a research project and sometimes we do two
research projects. This past fall we did a research project over certain parts
of the student handbook, and that made the project interesting. I had to do my
project over changes we wanted to the fall and spring exemption policy. While
doing this project we learned what other students and teachers thought about
the exemption policy, and from what we learned from our surveys we had to
create an argument about why we should have more exemptions, how exemptions are
a reward for students who work hard in their class, and that if we did not have
exemptions the students would not be as motivated to do as well in their
classes. After we had our argument and
paper finished, the groups presented our projects to the administration, head
of the English department and the superintendent to try to convince them to
change the exemption policy.
Using student opinion in a written format for an assignment is a great way to get students involved in the world they're living in and making themselves heard in school politics. It's super cool that your English department did this and I hope to see it more often.
ReplyDeleteYeah! It is! Dripping Springs High School has an interesting style of writing criteria. I love exemptions! Style forms like this is what all schools need. Like KJ, I agree that using student opinion in a written format for an assignment is fantastic to have a voice in the school politics. I hope DSHS keeps up that policy!
Deleteit is interesting to me that they do that its really cool because its great for many reasons and its just fun to dow ritting in many different ways especially for a person like me , a person who loves writting .
ReplyDeleteHEYYY Leslie its me girly but yeah thats really cool how your school do that and also i love how your school have an intresting style of writing criteria and Exemptions. My school also have exemptions and TRUST i try my hardest to get exempt... in fact i did this past year i was exempt from all of my classes but one and of course that was Algebra!!!But other than that i love the whole exemptions thing. Ttyl :-D
ReplyDeleteWow! I agree that having to stick to a format is very tedious. But sometimes it allows you to just plug in your own writing like the answers to variables in solving an algebra problem. Unlike being given total freedom in writing a paper, you don't have to wait until the ever-dry and ever-unreliable fountain of creativity decides to function (which can become a serious hindrance when you have deadlines to meet.) My school, unfortunately, would never allow us to do something like that. The student body and teachers are not allowed to have campaigns and create petition (all the other possible forms of changing school policies are also outlawed.)
